Can anyone convince me that the 1970s were not the greatest decade for music?

Dylan is certainly no Boz Scaggs - the first name mentioned on this thread.

Is this a for real post? You realize that just a couple years ago, he became the oldest artist to ever hit No. 1 on the Billboard album charts?

Dylan didn't invent anti-establishment music. He'll tell you that. He ripped it off from Woody Guthrie and all the other folkies. What he did do was improve its literary vocabulary and, somehow, at the same time, bring it to the masses. Neat trick there. And electrify it. Before "Like a Rolling Stone," you couldn't get a song over three minutes long on the radio. Tell Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr that Dylan wasn't influential.

And other than the occasional foray into protest music like "Hurricane," Dylan had largely abandoned making political statements by the late 1960's.

I don't know how anyone could listen to "Bringing It All Back Home," the entire album, or a song like "Desolation Row," and come away from it thinking that Dylan was anything but one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century, of any palette.

  5. I don't think people have even mentioned The Kinks, J Geils or Aerosmith.

The 70's were also the Golden Age of Saturday morning cartoons.

Pink Floyd - portentous soundtrack to amusement park laser shows from coast to coast.

    Also: "The Wizard of Oz"

  8. Even Pink Floyd tribute bands get their own specials on PBS.

Now that's greatness (or a complete waste of taxpayer money)

Rick Wakeman wants to know if Pink Floyd is the bloke in tights with the flute.

Not to mention pretentious drivel that makes angst-filled teenagers feel special. Pink Floyd's a stage that people go through---kinda like Ayn Rand---but grow out of when they become adults.
