How the fuck could Leyland put his drunk/hungover ass into the lineup Saturday night?

Lot of people wondering that, but he only lives a couple blocks from the hotel, so he might have walked/staggered/stumbled.

The impressive part of the story? According to one report, he was drinking with a Venezuelan member of the White Sox. I'm doubting it was Ozzie Guillen, which only leaves Freddy Garcia - who pitched a heck of a game a few hours later.

 

Well, Garcia was a member of the Tigers for about a month last year.

 

Because he's still better than Leyland's next option?

How many of us have gone out and gotten completely hammered the night before we had to cover a big event for work? It's not different than what he did. He went out drinking with the boys, came home late, his wife got pissed that he was hammered and woke their daughther up, got in his face and, by the way it sounds, took a couple swings at him. He probably deserved it.
The same people who whine and bitch about athletes just playing a game, they're the same people who freak the fuck out about stuff like this.
Just because Cabrera's a pro athlete doesn't mean he's not allowed to make stupid mistakes plenty of people make.

 

Out all night with guys on the team you are playing the next day with a playoff berth on the line is many layers of stupid.

 

Don't hold your breath on it. Guys who hit .320-33-101 ain't exactly dropping off the trees these days. :

It's not especially difficult to overcome a hangover. He was probably banking on a 45-minute IV treatment and boom, good as new.
