Buyouts Could Deplete Talent - gosh, ya think?

    Yeah, screw institutional memory.

    Especially on the desk, I want at least a couple of guys who remember who Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson were.

    Just old enough.


    A blend is needed. The temptation to dump big (senior) salary is overwhelming, and you see the results of this kind of thinking, day after day, in locally-produced text . . . and it's not just because a paper is understaffed. It's because too many of the
    relatively-inexperienced-underbackgrounded don't have the knowledge to handle everything that comes at them.

    At the Herald, the Guild bargained away seniority. It had to. The majority of younger members were quire prepared to blow up the Guild if their interests didn't come first.
    So spare me, please, younger newspaper people. Your age group is as selfish as mine. That's how people are made.
