  1. I have a Nikon D3100 and am looking to spend around $500 for a lens that can shoot basketball/volleyball indoors without flash. What lens would be a good option for me?

My suggestion is a Nikon 85mm 1.8 AFS, based on your budget and need for a big aperture since you're not wanting to use flash. At 1.8, you'll have a great low-light lens, especially for HS gyms with poor lighting. You'd need an 85mm (vs a 50mm 1.8 or 35mm 1.8 ) for a long enough focal length to shoot volleyball.
