Glub Glub the blue betta was bought this morning and is sitting in his new bowl in my daughter's room.

    I had a tetra:

His name was Sparky. My family gave him one week before I killed him. He lived four and a half years and I was distraught when he died. Tetras get along with several species of fish, like angelfish and other breeds of fish, so he won't get lonely. I would so recommend him. He was great companionship for the first three years of college. :)

Oh, and he started out in a little bowl and I eventually bought him a cute little aquarium that was four gallons and plenty of space for him.

Also, be careful about what rocks you get. I had the tiny little rocks and they got really disgusting after awhile.

I've actually recently considered buying a goldfish, but I can't even keep my houseplants alive.
I don't think I'm ready for sentient life.

I have a black thumb. I've killed every plant I've tried to raise, including one that was supposed to be unkillable, in less than a week. Fish are so much easier and I've managed to keep a cat alive for a year, so I wouldn't use the ability to keep plants alive as a yardstick for your ability to keep something living alive.
