    "Shiftless" has always flummoxed me.

    If you are shiftless, do you type in all small letters?

    Are you unable to shift direction? Of what shift are you in short supply?

    And how about those tiny snack bags you get on a flight? ...

    So it reads like the illustrator played the "a lot of my friends are black" card.

    Ask 100 people, get 100 different answers.

    My immediate thought was "four homeowners" (who for the sake of an illustration happen to be under the same roof. I saw two blacks, an exotic-looking woman in the top right (could be Latina, or Italian, or Greek, or whatever), and a white woman in the bottom left corner.

    Others see one black family, with a mom and pop and son and daughter.

    You see a possibly mixed-race couple.

    And people's outrage or indifference will be pegged to their interpretation.
