Not if it is clear that the market adjustment is temporary.

Further, there are already some alternative methods of energy being produced in other countries that the warm and fuzzy tree hugging crowd have consistently made impossible for the U.S. to examine.

We could do it in ten years, if we didn't have a bunch of pesky enviromental wackos regulating the shit out of every industry to the point where it is not profitable nor practical to go down that route.

I agree up to a point.

New technology has not been developed because the manufacturers of automobiles chose to avoid the issue. Sure, there were stabs at the electric car, hydrogen and ethanol, but none of that was ever a serious attempt. We know this to be the case based on the amount of money spent on engineering over the last 20-years by the largest American automakers.

Sure, they spent money on design and layout. They spent money on creating a stronger and more powerful engine. They spent pennies on finding a new engine.

I know the argument about supply and demand. I find that argument fraudulent. Years ago, had the country set the tone, developed a marketing strategy and decided to make this an issue, an American driven issue, it would have occurred and we would have paved the way forward before Brazil.

Don't forget Mr. Fusion. Who would have known that the garbage in my trash can could power a DeLorean.

Plenty of new technologies and refinements have been made in the areas of home heating over the last four decades. Oil burners and gas furnaces and water heaters have been made more efficient by factors of magnitude.

That we haven't managed to do the same with cars speaks volumes about where the real problems lie along these lines.

The Saudis changed their mind. They just wanted Bush to sweat a little.

RIYADH, May 16 -- Saudi Arabia announced Friday that it will boost oil production by about 300,000 barrels a day to meet increased demand from customers next month. The announcement came after President Bush met with Saudi King Abdullah to appeal for help in bringing down oil prices that are hitting record highs.

The Saudi increase is a modest one and appeared unlikely to have much effect on crude oil prices. But with the president under pressure at home to show he is fighting to lower gas prices, the gesture gave Bush a face-saving benefit from a day-long meeting with Saudi leaders.

In a news conference after the meeting, Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi said the increase went into effect Saturday and would raise output to 9.45 million barrels a day in June.

"On May 10, we increased our response to our customers by 300,000 barrels because they asked for it," Naimi said. "So our production for June will be 9.45 million barrels per day." He said the increase came at the request of "about 50 customers worldwide" and that most of the extra oil would go to the United States.

Hmmm . . . demand isn't higher, yet prices are soaring.

Ah, they finally demanded it . . . six days before you insisted that they had not demanded it.

Don't have a link, but Brazil is kicking ass using sugar cane ethanol. Supposedly, cane's better than corn in efficiency, and has a quicker growth cycle so the same land can produce more crops. Read a Pop Mechanics story last year that said something like a $50 billion difference in corn v. cane annually, if memory serves.
