Incidentally, if Ms. Solo gives up a soft goal in the third-place game, will she have a shovel strong enough to dig a hole deep enough?

She'd have to first borrow a shovel from Scurry or the head coach. Honestly, 4-nil in a soccer match?!? Isn't there a slaughter rule in soccer?

For us in the media, you have to read this:

    http://www.cbc.ca/sports/fifawomens/blog-paul/2007/09/ryans_goalkeeper_switch_backfi.html

Turns out that the U.S. team's media director didn't want Hope to talk to the press.

And for those who don't think Hope's attractiveness has anything to do with it, there have been rumors of her and Ryan hooking up at the '04 Olympics when Ryan was still an assistant.

Good thing Brianna's black or she would trashed for sucking in the most important game of the World Cup for the United States

The 4-0 argument could be a decent one, but Brazil dominated the game. The U.S. only had a few shots and missed on their best chance to score (Lilly from point blank). The defense didn't do a good job against Marta. Solo says she could have stopped all of those goals. I still think at least one would have still gone in, and that's all they needed.

That being said, the move was dumb. I understand Scurry was 12-0 against Brazil, but she was cold and was hesitant on some free balls that Solo should have handled easily because she is game tested. Not a smart move, but when you don't score, it doesn't matter how many goals you give up after after the opponent's first. The offense was crap. You don't score, you can't win.

Mad props to Solo for talking to the media and not being bossed around by the PR flack.

But let's be honest -- if she isn't white and attractive, nobody's calling her a "spoiled brat."

She didn't belittle the teammate's career. She pointed out that the teammate had an accomplished career, with the emphasis on "had." It was an incredibly stupid decision to start Scurry.

Solo's remarks may not have been all that wise, but at least she has the advantage of being correct.

It was the heat of the moment, but it was low class of her to belittle a teammate. It's one thing to say that you wanted to be out there and even deserved to be out there. It's another to say that you would have done a better job. And guess what, she wasn't saving at least 3 of those goals.

Again, stupid move by the coach, but it isn't as if you are sitting MJ in game 7 of the finals. The play of the keeper was not the difference in the least. Solo is a good keeper who had some decent games (after giving up a terrible goal in the 1st game). She had very little to do the three games prior and did what she was supposed to do, but she wasn't the difference.

If the coach is taking out a failed relationship on the player, sitting her for a world championship semifinal, he should be fired. On the spot.

PC, that's bullshit. The problem people would have with Solo's comments go well beyond her physical appearance.

That's not what I said. I said nobody would call her a "spoiled brat," and they wouldn't. She's been called spoiled repeatedly on this thread and it makes no sense whatsoever. She's not saying she was somehow entitled to play; she's saying it was a stupid decision, everyone knows it was stupid, and she would have played better. And she's right on all three counts.

If you want to call her classless, rude, foolish, a bad teammate, or any number of other things, have at it. They're all defensible comments. But people are calling her "spoiled" like her daddy didn't give her the convertible she wanted for her sweet 16 party. It's demeaning and off-base.
