    I don't think that they're surprised, behind the scenes. But they don't want voters to think that. I don't know why. Poll management is an interesting aspect of campaigning. It seems like you have to really have a feel for when it energizes voters to be behind and when it energizes them to be ahead, not to mention the importance of margins to make it even more complicated.

    So a pollster with a noted R+3 lean polls an R+5 state in a national election considered dead even, and comes up with R+8.
