Rachel Maddow is for stricter gun control laws and late term abortions.

The "if only New York and Chicago had stricter gun laws" is a strawman because the problem is that in each location, it's easy to cross a border and load up legally. Especially Chicago. An individual city or state law isn't going to do much good if there's someplace easily accessible to buy all you need. However, at least what it can do is strengthen penalties for those involved in gun crimes.

Of course, gun laws are one thing. Getting the culture to change so that so many people don't look at guns or killing as Plan A in problem-solving is another.

Also, while message boards are probably already filling up with "if New Yorkers could carry guns they could have taken down that guy," I don't think any of us would want to walk in front of the Empire State Building at 9 a.m. on a weekday while amateur gunslingers are blasting away trying to hit whomever they think is the criminal.

Why not? Maybe if we put a premium on all lives then gun control discussions would be easier.

As it stands now there are too many shades of grey in how we as a country value lives. It's like a Chinese menu littered with contradictions.

Yank Fan raises a great point. Why isn't there more of a spot light brought to all the murders day in and day out in the Chicago area?

Well if the victim had been carrying a gun we probably would have had the same result - two dead.

Sounds like a bullet is what stopped the shooting.

Cops rarely fire their weapons. Accurate shooting is about being trained properly, and keeping current.

Gun enthusiasts likely shoot more often than your average cop.

The simplest and easiest form of gun control, which will never be enacted by any jurisdiction, is taxation. A national value-added tax on firearms and ammunition and a registration excise tax by local governments such as people pay for their automobiles in many jurisdictions.
But our national male fantasies and insecurities must rule. The whole country operates under the principle "Do you feel lucky?" Some in New York and Chicago weren't.

Yeah, that'll wipe out the illegal gun trade.

Original shooting was on the 11th floor.

The rest of the shots fired were on the street as the cops tried to catch the guy.

I won't be surprised if a number of those shots were shot by the cops. Which I guess means we should take guns away from the cops too.

Everybody on the sidewalk who isn't shooting at that guy is a pussy [/3Octavefart]

FOX: The shooter was a designer of ladies handbags.

Well, that blows up a stereotype.
