We always used a football, though I'm thinking it could make a nice drill for soccer teams. Keeper punts the ball, midfielders try to win the ball in the air (100 pts, off one bounce is 50 ... bounces twice and everyone is docked 100 pts). First to 500 doesn't have to run hills after practice, or something like that.

Boom: Are you channeling stoob in this thread?

Well, there was this kid that was killed playing on West 16th Street in Indy when Wilbur Shaw's tire cleared the fence and ... oh, this was "playing 500," not "playing at the 500."

we played something in football offseason called murder ball.
It was in a practice gym, so no bleacers, just concrete walls about two feet from the playing surface.
We played with a basketball but you couldn't dribble, you could run with the ball, but the prefered mathod of getting the ball around was passing since it was basically kill the man with the ball.
You could be checked into the walls and you could also throw the ball off the walls. So it was like this combination of arena football, rugby and professional wrestling.

I don't remember playing anything that sounds like 500. If we didn't have enough to play a full game, we's split up, automatic outs if it was hit where you didn't have a fielder and ghostrunners.
    Good times.

Dodgeball. If you didn't hurt someone, you weren't playing it right.

We played this too, it was called Sting, because when you have to line up and get the balls thrown at you, well, it stung. The way we played it was one guy would throw the ball off the wall and someone would field it. If they fielded it cleanly they'd just throw again. If they bobbled it though they'd have to sprint to the wall and someone else would pick up the ball and try to hit them before they got to the wall. If you got hit that was one out. If you wanted to really step it up we'd play with two balls; had to really be on your toes then.

Only relatively serious injury was when a kid was looking back while running to try to dodge the throw and ran face first into a concrete wall. Cut up his face pretty bad, but obviously nothing this bad.

One of my all-time favorite games.
