So now some of us are equating murder victims, those victimized by child porn and victims of drunk driving incidents with ... bears.

    That's just terrific.

Compassion for the animals is a good thing, but so is common sense.

Calvin, as dumb as that is, it's hardly one of the most ridiculous things you'll ever read here.

    That's a scary thought, Double J. And yet, I'm sure you're right.

I think I've read stories in the past about the Make-a-Wish foundation and the controversy over whether they should grant wishes that involve big-game hunts. (I realize this particular story does not involve the foundation).

I've never been interested in hunting, but don't have a problem with it, per se. I do have to wonder, however, about the hunters who hunt large and/or exotic animals. Their goal is to come across the largest, most beautiful animals they can find... and then kill them. I just don't get that, and probably never will.

cake, To me it's no different than a guy who is hunting squirrels... or deer... or any other living thing. I don't distinguish based on how exotic or large the animal is. A hunter is still a guy killing animals. I'll never understand why someone enjoys killing living things.

I hunt. A lot. I can't say I "enjoy" killing a living animal. But I do it. My dad hunted, his dad hunted, my great-grandfather hunted and my great-great grandfather hunted.
I think know the differing opinions are a result of the culture in which one was raised. Those who were raised in a rural setting are more likely to be a part of the hunting community, or at least accept it, than those who were raised in an urban setting. That's just the nature of the beast, no pun intended.

To help clairfy matters, read "Inherit the Hunt" by Jim Posewitz. It might help you understand.

I really don't have a problem with people hunting. I agree that exotic animal hunting turns me off.

As does hunting in an enclosed area. Hell, just take a sledge hammer and hit a cow on the noggin.

Dan, are you kin to Boots? Between animals and race, you both are WAY oversensitive...beyond a reasonable level.

The vast majority of hunters have a problem with canned hunts i.e. like the kid who shot the huge hog in a fenced-in acreage. Fair chase is an important aspect of ethical hunting.

I sometimes do after cleaning what I've shot.
Other times, pizza is an option.

Always clean what you've shot before going out to eat, though.

Fair Chase is a huge issue between people who hunt and the people I've been known to refer to as animal killers.

If you're not giving the animal a chance, i.e. locking it a pin where you can't get out, you're not hunting, you're simply killing for the sake of killing.

Oh, and the "hunts" where you log on to some Web site and click your mouse to fire a gun that's aimed directly at an animal (I've heard they're tied, but I don't know that for a fact), not even close to hunting. That's a firing squad. If you wanna hunt exotic game, go to Africa and do it right.
