It was 32 years ago at the Phoenix when I did my first Ron Borges controversy, when he held up a story about Raymond Berry's actions on Pats' players drug use at Berry's request until after the Super Bowl. He's always flown very close to the sun. Too close. WEEI is a poison that decent people should react to with torches and nooses.

    Designer got tricked, too.

Also tricked: Whichever senior editor told the designer: "We got a great story here. Blow it out on the cover."

About 30 fewer words than normal on the cover.

Which makes their website populated by generally decent people an even weirder thing.

What's clear is that WEEI and Barstool have become like the Al Qaeda and ISIS of sports media. Barstool is the new terrorists, but the old dogs at WEEI can still bite if given the chance. They may not have encouraged the caller to pull this prank, but they totally celebrated it and loved every minute.

How angry is Portnoy that his people didn't think of this first? Thankfully they're handling it well.

The people who run Barstool and the people who like this shit are borderline subhuman.

Barstool is among the worst fucking things on this planet. Those fuckers cannot be taken down fast enough.

Portnoy also is a millionaire. The moral of the story: trash sells.

As for WEEI, Minihane is the main yahoo. Their PM drive show is top notch, even if it’s a bit bland. Middays can get nutty, but nothing like AM drive.

Borges could be one of those columnists who likes to compete with his own paper's beat writers, therefore skipping the logical step of running the circumstances of his "reporting" by them. This mess also shows how risky, and lacking in credibility, the easy use of anonymous sources has become. Most of the time, such sources are easy to deduce and are serving an obvious agenda. Besides, with a lot of writers, if you watch them and their go-to guys over time, the dots become easy to connect. Wonder how many single-sourced or even concocted BS stories have been put out there with the claim of "sources."
