The previous record was 25, by Buck Freeman in 1899.

And he was hitting a lot more than 30 in the years that he was outhomering teams, a feat he accomplished every year from 1919-1924 and 1926-1932.

 

Actually, the single season record was 27 by Ned Williamson set in 1884. Ruth broke that record with 29 in 1919 and he broke that mark with 54 in 1920. Bonds would have to have hit over 120 HRs in a season to do to the record what Ruth did. By any measure, Bonds comes up lacking against Ruth

 

Between 1918 and 1935 every player who won an outright homerun crown that wasn't named Babe Ruth, is in the Hall of Fame
