One of my favorite all-time announcers, Bobby Murcer, is having brain surgery to remove a tumor. He was one of the first guys I heard announce a game and he will always been one of my favorites. Never sounded like a jerk or egotist to me. Let's hope everything is OK and he comes out of this just fine.

I, too, hope Murcer comes out of this okay. He is a nice guy who deserves better. He's not my favorite announcer but that hardly matters. I dealt with him on occasion as a player and he was a good interview and an accessible guy and I wish him good health.

This one hit me like a ton of bricks this morning. I grew up with him as one of my favorite players, and later learned firsthand what a nice guy he is. Just an incredibly genuine person. If you ever want visual confirmation of how baseball has changed, pull up some old tape of Murcer playing centerfield in the late 70s and compare him to the size of a typical outfielder now. It's not like he was considered a slap hitter.

I am praying that he pulls out of the surgery OK and they get the tumor out.

"That tumor is high! It is far! It is........gone!"

We hope. Best wishes to a former Cub and even better, an Okie.

  6. i remember going to a Yankees game at Shea Stadium actually when they were refurbishing Yankee Stadium and seeing Murcer suffer a severe injury -- ankle? -- when he tripped on a drain or something in the outfield.

always hated the yankees but liked murcer. rooting for him to make a full recovery

Every time I read one of these stories now it makes me wonder if it was caused by cell phone use.

Bobby Murcer is a good man. Here's to a speedy recovery.
