And you're this bent outta shape over headlights?

I think what she's getting at is the fact that she's upset she can't go in and replace them herself. Perhaps she could on her previous lemon car.

Not that it wasn't a pain in the butt, but changing the headlights on my escort didn't require taking the car half apart or any sort of specialty tool, and it never should.

But just think how many times a thief came up to your car, wanted to steal the headlights, but just didn't have time to take the car apart to do so.]

That's an excellent selling point. They should put that in their ads.

Good for you, both, and best of luck for many more maintenance free miles. You do seem to fall in the lucky minority, though. I've never had an American car get anywhere near 10 years old. In fact, they conveniently began to fall apart just as the warranties were expiring....

I had to do that with a Ford I once had...actually had to pull the entire battery out of the car...in like 10 degree-weather, too...

The headlights on my Chevy have these two plastic slats you have to pull out that hold the lens assembly in place. When you put the assembly back in, you have to align it just right, or the lights will shine in a cockeyed direction. Pain in the ass.

  12. I have a '99 Grand Am and I've never had a problem changing the headlights. I think I know what piece you're talking about. They're almost like little pop rivets (that's the only way I know how to describe it). You take a flat head screwdriver, and pry the small circle in the center up and the whole rivet pops right out.

The only problem I've had is the plastic circle thing that actually holds the headlight in place tends to have one of the teeth snap off and then the bulb sits in there all loose.

My Grand Am has 172k on it and I rarely have major problems in it. Just put in a new starter and battery for $250, but otherwise it's pretty easy to change the oil and brake pads on my own and I'm far from a grease monkey.
