Donovan is making what looks like a bad short-term move, but a great long-term one. Go to the NBA for a few years at the top of your college genius, get knocked around, let people blame it on being a college coach in the NBA, and then wait for some desperate school to hire you for gazillions of dollars.

Hey, he has almost nowhere to go but down in Florida. As he learned from Pitino, if you fail in the pros, you don't kill your college reputation.

    Not the case.
Just noting that it was being reported elsewhere, too.

Hmph. A friend just signed on as an assistant coach down there about ten days ago. So much for his job security...

  5. Good point. We were just discussing that same thing in the office here.

Donovan's no better than Saban in this instance.

  8. Billy Donovan on May 24:

"My focus is on coaching at the University of Florida," said Donovan, whose stature skyrocketed after leading UF to back-to-back national titles. "I look forward to sitting down with Jeremy (Foley) and Dr. (Bernie) Machen and finalizing a contract in the very near future."

Valid point. Pitino, Calipari, Floyd, Kruger all had colleges begging to hire them after they failed miserably in the NBA. So its mostly a can't lose move, he'll make gazillions in Orlando and, if even if he fails, will still have universities falling all over themselves to pay him gazillions to come back to the college game. So why not give it a try, he's now got nowhere to go but down at Florida.

And yet despite that fact, I'd still say Kruger is the best coach the Hawks have had post-Lenny Wilkens.

Absolutely not. Kentucky fans are delusional as to how great their program really is and if he wasn't in the Final Four every other year they'd be screaming for his head.

Oh wait a minute, he's white, so maybe you are right, he should have gone there.
