Betting the horses

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by Pulitzer Wannabe, Apr 3, 2008.

  1. Is it legal to do it online? Or was that part of the Great Online Sin Purge of 2006?

I'd love to learn how to handicap - take like $20 a week and have fun some fun with it.

Seems like a fun hobby from the several times I've been around the track.

There are any number of wholly-legal online options, the availability of which are largely based on the state in which you live. I presume you live in a state with at least one live track -- contacting them would be a good place to start.

The current dilemma is that there's currently no single legal online source which is going to give you access to all of the worthwhile tracks, all of the time.

    Thoroughbets.com works for me.

If you live outside the States, you can get full track odds and a 7% rebate.
    Stateside . . . eh.

  6. Go to the track. Buy the best seat you can. Drink a cocktail. Squint over ther racing form. Pretend you're Jackie Gleason or someone. Then bet the horse with the same name as your childhood dog.
And see the races at Keeneland once before you die.

$20 a week? There's gonna be some mighty short weeks.

That might get me to the third race...on day one.

My favorite advice from a horse-playing friend: "Bet the Gray"

Good advice. They are usually ugly and so have better odds.

It's uncanny! You get all wrapped up in the shiny brown steeds, ears pricking in the post parade, yearning to run. Then down the stretch comes a gray to grab second by a nose and destroy your exacta.

    Bet. The. Gray.

Amen on the Keeneland suggestion. I'll never be able to enjoy another race track.
