    I'm not proud of this, but here it goes ...

    Around a year ago, at my last stop, I took out a few books, read them and completely forgot about the damn things.

    One ended up under a pile on the kitchen table. Another, a small paperback, got wedged between the couch cushions. I don't know why, but one somehow made its way into a dresser drawer.

    When I finally found -- um, took 15 minutes to go digging around the apartment -- the books, the bill was more than $70. They had to be at least three months past due, probably longer.

    And, oh yeah, the library was ACROSS THE STREET from the newsroom.

    Thank God I'm not lazy. :)
