Best year for movies?

I want to think the six-month writers strike of mid-1988 was some contributing factor to the subpar films that were shot in '89 and released in 1990.

A very partial list of 1999 movies, some of which I saw in the theater:
American Beauty* — Who's the king? Who's the king?
    American Pie
    Analyze This
    Any Given Sunday
The Astronaut's Wife* — Odd film with a predictable ending.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
    Being John Malkovich
The Blair Witch Project* — Saw it before the "secret" was out. Creepy as hell.
Bowfinger* — Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin together in a not funny movie.
    Boys Don't Cry
    The Cider House Rules
    Dogma* — Alanis as god
Double Jeopardy* — The year's worst film, and maybe the decade's worst. Ashley Judd's nadir, and that's saying something.
End of Days* — An unremarkable Arnold film.
    Election
    Eyes Wide Shut
Fight Club* — All jacked up on testosterone coming out of the theater. Didn't last.
    Girl, Interrupted
    The Green Mile
    The Hurricane
    Magnolia
    Man on the Moon
The Matrix* — Kicked off the franchise, and made Keanu a box office draw.
    October Sky
    Runaway Bride
The Sixth Sense* — Literal goosebumps.
Sleepy Hollow* — Johnny Depp pretty much sucks, as does the movie. Cartoon was better.
    Snow Falling on Cedars
    South Park movie
    Summer of Sam
    The Talented Mr. Ripley
Three Kings* — Do the thing you're scared of, and the courage comes after. That's why I jumped off a cliff on the Buffalo River in Arkansas.
    Toy Story 2
    Varsity Blues
    The Virgin Suicides
    Wild, Wild West
The World is Not Enough* — "I thought Christmas only came once a year." Whole theater: groan

    *Saw in theater

Hell of a year. Plus Notting Hill, the ultimate counter-programming opposite a terrible Star Wars.

I've seen each of those movies at least six times.

I saw Being John Malkovich with three or four other couples after we all drank a hell of a lot of wine over dinner.

Not the kind of movie you want to see in a theatre when you're even the least bit impaired. I've not seen it since.

Originally was thinking 1994, but I'm gonna say 1993 was better:

    Schindler's List
    Jurassic Park
    Groundhog Day
    Mrs. Doubtfire
    The Sandlot
    The Fugitive
    Sleepless in Seattle
    What's Eating Gilbert Grape
    Philadelphia
    Dazed and Confused
    Rudy
    Shadowlands
What's Love Got to Do With It
    The Crying Game
    Army of Darkness
    Falling Down
    Swing Kids
    Lost in Yonkers
    Hot Shots! Part Deux
    Menace II Society
    The Firm
    Hocus Pocus
    Robin Hood: Men in Tights
    Searching for Bobby Fischer
    The Program
    Cool Runnings
    The Nightmare Before Christmas
    Fatal Instinct
    Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

I know the Oscars have been moved up from March, but dang, I remember when they aired on the same night at the NCAA final. Probably a blessing for the actresses who can finally eat after a month long fast during awards season.
