What is the best way to break ties in a team sporting contest?

  1. Play until someone scores (like the NHL Playoffs)

Because it adds to the strategy and makes the coaches decide the best use. Unlimited subs would be horrible for fans as well. Can't beleive they don't add any for extra time though.

Precisely because it's an endurance sport. With free subs it's not an endurance sport.

Plus, there's no reason to change it. It's fine the way it is, and it's a key part of the strategy.

    And this as well.

In league matches, subs weren't even used at all until the mid-1960s.

If it's an endurance sport, then play sudden-death OT until somebody scores.

Even the most fit players have limits to their endurance.

Then change the substitution rule. But don't use fatigue as a reason to just turn the game over to keepers and snipers.

The substitution rule is in place for good reason. And you'd have to sub out the entire team, essentially. There are only 23 men on the roster. Not saying it's not doable, but they're not going to do it.

As much as it sucks to get eliminated on a penalty kick, I can't come up with a superior way to break the tie.

Argentina and the Netherlands could have played for two more days and neither would have scored. I guess at some point, you have to stop it.

And, yes, they should have stopped tennis matches at Wimbledon long before the fifth set gets to 70-68. Maybe 15-all or something and you go to a tiebreak.

What's disturbing is the percentage of games that aren't being settled in extra time and requiring shootouts.

They though the golden goal would get teams to try to score, but it had the opposite effect. Not sure why they eliminated the silver goal ... it's stupid to play the final 15 minutes of extra time if someone has already scored.
