What is the best way to break ties in a team sporting contest?

tony, the biggest difference too between regulation and PK shootout is that all of the PKs in regulation are being taken by the designated specialist, the #1 guy on the team.

Fair point. But with the rule as it is, if your other guys aren't putting in a lot of practice on this, you're not much of a coach.

You could say the same about free throws. What excuse is there for anyone to shoot below 80 percent? Regardless, some guys are better than others at it.

The numbers show the success rate in shootouts is somewhere in the 70-80 percent range. Hardly automatic.

You win, it's a great idea. Goalies not being allowed to use their hands, brilliant.

Someone mentioned sudden death in extra time. FIFA tried that in WC 98 and a few years after. It was called golden goal and didn't go over. They changed it to silver goal where you played out the period you were in. That didn't work, either.

What were the objections to golden goal? I remember the '96 Euro Championships ending on one, and everybody seemed to think it was fantastic.

Ah yes, the Ukraine-Switzerland shootout. The worst shootout ever to cap the worst World Cup game ever.

It didn't produce more attacking play, and in fact it had exactly the opposite effect, in that teams became even more hesitant to attack for fear of losing the game in one breath.

    Only in extra time.

But as is always the case with you, you offer nothing and simply rip on those putting ideas out there.

Says the guy who's reviving the same stupid waffle about settling ties that we had in 2006 and 2010.

Your idea is insane. You actually believe that not allowing goalies to use their hands is a legitimate idea that Gould be discussed?

I have no problem with the way the game is, I don't need to add some gimmicky solution to a problem I don't see.

There are ideas on here that make sense if you feel there's a problem, your idea isn't one of them.

I think in baseball, apart from catchers, players should play without gloves in extra innings, discuss.

So you think there's a huge amount of baseball fans out there who have a big problem with how games tied after nine innings are decided? I think that explains a lot about you.

By the way, in case you didn't know, they've already -- over the course of years -- changed rules that have disallowed the keepers to use their hands on the ball.
