Best way to play this story?

No way. If one photo's going to dominate, it has to be the final for the simple reason that the championship game is bigger than the semifinal.

  2. FB, instead of running competing gamers and art, why not package it together as a sort of feature piece on the team's improbable run through the playoffs? Interview the coaches, players, etc., and focus on what a big deal it was to the school and community. That way you can run dominant art of them celebrating and perhaps a good action shot from either game on the front, and relegate any crying photos inside. The tone of the piece can be positive and you can still work in the title game loss without pissing off the locals. If you have room, you could even run short gamers from each game as sidebars inside.

Just some thoughts. Remember, as a weekly, you don't have to package news in the same way as someone at a daily.

That's pretty much what I ended up doing -- wrote a main feature on the program "making history" by becoming the first soccer team in the county to play for a state championship. Recapped the season, from its 0-2 start to its 17-game win streak and then threw in some "play-by-play" from the last two playoff contests. Also write a sidebar on the interesting mix of senior leaders and hot-shot freshmen scorers, and how they worked well together all season...

Also had a by-the-numbers and a "they said it" section, plus tons of photos (and links to more galleries on our Web site,). Basically a love fest ... and hopefully more papers sold!! and more money for our chain, which I'll never see because it goes straight to Wall Street... But that's another thread...

It's a weekly, thus none of it is timely and the story is not one game ... it's the run the team was on.
