I already confessed that I have fallen asleep every time I try to watch the Deer Hunter. (Shoot yourself in the head, Walken, who cares?)

I also always doze off whenever Brando hits the screen in Apocalypse Now.

    Up to that, it's great.

Forrest Gump, anyone? After all, he got shot in the buttocks!

The extended cut of Apocalypse Now sounds like torture. I hated that movie. It was far, far too weird for me.

Some of you keep saying that the "two movies" aspect of FMJ is a plus ... I never considered it that. Rather, that's what keeps it from being as good as Platoon, in my mind.

    Thus, Platoon was my choice.

Took a war films class in college. Watched several of these. I'd say "The Deer Hunter" was near the top with "Born on the 4th of July" and "Apocalypse Now." Could never get into "Full Metal Jacket."

The extended cut of Apocolypse actually seems shorter and less surreal.

I'll go with "Platoon," just because the characters were compelling, even the minor ones. Really good cast in that movie.

I also thought Willem Dafoe was good in "Off Limits" a few years later. Another Nam flick.

Voted for "Deer Hunter," "Apocalypse Now" a close second.

If you like "The Things They Carried" (which is tremendous) or Tim O'Brien in general, you'd probably like "Going After Cacciato."

Frank Drebin thought 'Platoon' was hilarious.

It's funny, I was reading this thread on my BlackBerry earlier today, and before I got to your post, I was thinking "If someone says Platoon, I'm going to grind my teeth."

Surprised Casualties Of War hasn't been mentioned. It's the one where Sean Penn barely speaks English and which was also Michael J. Fox's stab at relevance!

I'm curious for those who really love Full Metal Jacket...what do they love about it?

    Interesting discussion.
