C'mon, wouldn't you like to have a catch?
And hey, it ain't my best sports movie, but how did the thread get so long with nary a mention?
And I will offer up ... "Better Off Dead."
    OK, maybe "Million Dollar Baby."

I read the book recently, pretty good stuff. Having Salinger in there instead of fake Salinger was great. Plus the ending's not as saccharine because it's set up better.

Love the book. It's an absolute original, and given the required suspension of disbelief, quite the ride. Not fighting that battle again, here, but the book is infinitely better than the movie.
I just remain grateful the movie wasn't a disaster.

    Sirs, Madames,

This Sporting Life is one of the great films of any genre. Richard Harris as a brutal rugby player.

Hoop Dreams is up there. I like That Championship Season as well.

John from Cincinnati as a mini-series.

This Sporting Life is a classic. Depressing beyond all get-out, though.

Probably nobody outside of Canuckistan has seen this, but The Rocket, a Quebec film about Rocket Richard is terrific.

Roy Dupuis (Quebec's answer to Brad Pitt) plays the Rocket.

Also not to be missed are: Vinnie Lecavalier as Jean Beliveau, Mike Ricci as Elmer Lach, annd Sean Avery as Bob Dill (who the Rocket beats the crap out of)

It's a blatantly political sports movies about life in Anglophone ruled Quebec of the 40's and 50's.

    Worth catching.

Oh, and I'm with FB about Field of Dreams.

    Godawful

Somebody Up There Likes Me - a movie about Rocky Graziano. Also, Paul Newman appeared in a live television play, "Bang The Drum Slowly", in the early 1950s - I'm thinking it was something like 1953. It was one of his first important roles.
