"Dust in the Wind" -- Kansas
"Girl of Mysterious Sorrow" -- Marc Cohn
    "I'm Already There" -- Lonestar
"Holes in the Floor of Heaven" -- Steve Wariner
"This is Not Goodbye" -- Melissa Etheridge

I'm going to watch more (horrible tape-delayed) Olympics coverage now, before I cry.

Schmaltzy as all get-out, but I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet:

Abraham, Martin & John -- Dion

(Marvin Gaye's version probably is the best, although Moms Mabley did have a unique take on it: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:jxfoxzrjldhe )

A rip song in name only. But 'in memory of elizabeth reed' by the allman brothers is a good jam.

I mentioned Whiskey Lullaby earlier, and I left off my favorite country song of all-time, Hank's "Long Gone Lonseome Blues," because it's not an RIP song. But these lyrics make it a death song to me.

Im gonna find me a river, one that's cold as ice.
And when I find me that river, lord I'm gonna pay the price, oh lord!
Im goin' down in it three times, but lord I'm only comin' up twice.

    Sirs, Madames,

Freddie's Dead -- Curtis Mayfield from Superfly

    Everybody's misused him
Ripped him off and abused him
    Another junkie plan
    Pushin' dope for the man
    A terrible blow
    But that's how it goes
A Freddie's on the corner now
If you wanna be a junkie, wow
    Remember Freddie's dead

Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner -- there are so many Zevon songs to pick from

Knockin' On Heaven's Door -- the original, tho' Zevon would do

Who Killed Davey Moore -- Zimmerman again

Let Him Roll -- Guy Clark

    YD&OHS, etc

If this is for songs about death, then I submit "Some Mother's Son" by The Kinks.
