And he lost a lot of races around the warning track.

  3. Nixon ... I wouldn't have listed him, but we had a history class in college and more than one (older) student listed Nixon as the greatest based solely on the fact he ended the war in Vietnam.
And aside from being a lying sack of shit he was pretty good on foreign policy.

Can anyone name the 20th Century president who presided over this economy?

    a) an economy that grew more than 4 percent a year during his tenure, in real terms.
    b) joblessness that averaged less than 5 percent.
    c) wages and purchasing power increasing during his 8 years.
    d) reduced the nation's debt, and had a federal budget surplus every year he was in office. He actually reduced the Federal budget each year.
    e) he lowered taxes. Yet, the wealthiest Americans paid a greater share of taxes than they had before him.
    f) presided over a period during which long-term interest rates came down by almost half, and private pensions more than doubled.

  5. Eisenhower, who had the fortune of the post-war boom?

    g) campaigned aggressively behind the scenes against the decision in Brown v. Board of Education.

    Nope. :)

Want me to say, or just let people guess?

He's not on the poll list.

I voted for Truman in our poll. The man followed the courage of his convictions and made hard decisions.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but if the question was "leadership," I'd go with FDR.
