The guy who painted our house this summer was good with a brush.
That does not make him Picasso.

Hell, there are guys who haven't been named. The irrespresible Bury Bacharach, Dr. Dre, Irv Gotti, hell the list can go on for a while.

    Just Blaze
    Timbaland
    Rick Rubin

Basically any Top-40 song you hear these days was produced by one of the three.

I'd be interested to hear what Rubin's "top-40" history is. Dude does a lot of stuff that is outside of what is accepted as popular enough to get a lot of play. I'm eager to hear what he does with Metallica.

Timbaland was indeed a joke on my part; I even almost posted it as:

    Timbaland.

Who is "Just Blaze"? Where does that name come from? Is that because he does all the production work, and the artists can just sit in the studio and smoke pot?

    "Yo, Just, need some help?"

"No man . . .just blaze."

His main goal in hip-hop is to flip samples, with songs like "December 4th" by Jay-Z as well as "Touch the Sky" by Kanye West. Many of his songs are not Top 40, but they are pillars in the hip-hop community.

Timbaland is one of the best today. He produced Justin Timberlake's album "Future Sex/Love Sounds" as well as many songs like Nelly Furtado and Nelly use. His style of producing is a more hard-hitting drum, club vibe than many others.

Jermaine Dupree should also be mentioned.

If we are talking about Jermaine DUPRI, then yes. I don't know a Jermaine Dupree. He's not bad, but he doesn't warrant mention on a level of Timbaland or Rick Rubin.

    May,

Our brilliance is lost on this thread's posters.

I think the fact that Rick Rubin may not have a signature sound is a plus, not a minus. Instead, he brings out the best in the artist.
