    "Unhappy Birthday" -- The Smiths

Actually led a mix tape with this song and mailed it to ex-girlfriend after she dumped me in the fall of 1988. Ah, to be young and dumb.

All is so much better 20 years later, but I still look back and laugh at having done that.

  4. Just to keep you satisfied - Marvin Gaye

Heart-wrenching as it gets, but to the point that's for damn sure. A classic.

Bingo. Complete with the spoken intro. "Whether the man or woman is leaving is unimportant. It's a breakup."

That being said, "Trying to Stop Your Leaving" is a great call.

"With Or Without You" -- U2
"Shadow Of The Day" -- Linkin Park (which, go figure, sounds an awful lot like the U2 song)
    "Last Goodbye" -- Jeff Buckley
"I Can't Make You Love Me" -- Bonnie Raitt
"Time In A Bottle" -- Jim Croce

I'll throw out Adams's "Ain't Gonna Cry", one of his underrated rockers. "You're history, baby!"
