I know it's not backing vocals, but my favorite band of all time (the Eagles) started as session muscians for Linda Ronstadt. I think that's pretty cool.

True, though the way Eddie and Alex talk about him these days may make one think differently.

Michael McDonald on Steely Dan's "Aja" album -

    Broadway Duchess
    Darling if you only knew
    Half as much as
    Everybody thinks you do
    What I hear
    May be true
    I would still be proud
    To know you

I'll give James Taylor's regular Arnold McCuller a shout out. Fun facts: His vocals were dubbed with Andre Braugher's in the movie Duets, he was also in The Sum of All Fears as the National Anthem singer at the Super Bowl.

Clare Torry performed many times as a backup singer, but her turn on 'The Great Gig in the Sky' can't really be qualified as backing vocals.

Possibly ... but the counterpoint is that Torry is not a member of Pink Floyd. Depends on the interpretation.

Definitely a guest vocal, and a classic one.

    I believe she sued -- successfully -- to get a co-writing credit.

Reminds me - Martha Wash - "Gonna Make You Sweat"

Does Alan Jackson's use of Jimmy Buffett in 5'o Clock Somewhere count? Buffett is another one of those guys who is probably connected to just about everybody in the business either through using back-up singers or singing background for others.
