And I met him once in Tokyo. Crossing the street.

 

I saw the Who at Alpine Valley during their 25th anniversary concert. Acoustics were, for the most part, awful. But Entwistle kicked ass. "Boris the Spider" was the highlight of the show.

 

I'll back you up there. Saw him live with Bela. F'ing amazing.

 

Entwistle wins this one by a mile, but I'll throw out a name that hasn't been mentioned yet -- Bruce Thomas of the Attractions. Fantastic bass player, but apparently enough of an asshole that Elvis now will have nothing to do with him.

Jerry Scheff is pretty damn good, too.

 

Damn, Mingus. Knew I missed one in the jazz category.

 

His solo band is great, too. He has an album where it's just bass and voice (A Show of Hands), and that's entertaining as hell.

I'd give Entwistle the nod for rock. Listen to him on "Won't Get Fooled Again" -- he makes that song epic as much as anything else.
