    I'll get derision from the young punks but McCartney was pretty good in his day. He's at least in the left-handed top three.

    McCartney is an excellent bass player. Love the bass line on "And Your Bird Can Sing." Just fun and bouncy.

    As for rock, Flea and Entwistle are among the top two or three. Bootsy Collins is terrific,

    But Krist Novoselic could hardly play, but it was punk so who cared. Might as well nominate DeeDee Ramone or Sid Vicious.

    And Melissa Auf der Mar may definitely be the hottest bass player I've ever seen.

    As a combo bassist-songwriter and singer, I'll go with Kim Deal for the gals (channeling my inner boots) and McCartney for the fellows.

    John Paul Jones

    Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are always better when they have Jonesy standing in the shadows behind them. There is no Zeppelin without the rhythm section.
