Beloved Sports Icons of Past

    As a spin-off from the other thread, just read a wonderful warm story in my SI from Verducci about Tom Terrific Seaver. He was a huge icon to me in the 70’s, the epitome of the pitcher. I loved watching him throw. In the story he and his wife were apparently Baseballs Magic Couple so I thought of making this thread.

    Others from my memory: Ali; Joe D; Mantle; Garvey (for a long time then ...), Bart Starr, Jenner (until marrying into Kardashians and the Kaitlyn)

    You have to throw Namath in there.

    Also, I wonder where Aaron falls on that list? It would seem he didn’t achieve icon status until late in his career/post retirement.

    That was a helluva story about Seaver. Didn't know how much he and his wife were like royalty in New York.
