Belmont Stakes/Big Brown/Triple Crown

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by trifectarich, Jun 4, 2008.

  1. OK - someone talk me out of a $50 show Ready's Echo; $50 show Denis of Cork and a $2 tri-box 1-4-9

You have till 8:00 am to tell me not to do it.

I am thinking something along those lines. But not that much money on those two horses you said. I was almost going to go 1-All-All, but I don't know what the payout would be, plus if Big Brown chokes, well, I would be out of $72. I am going to lay about $5 on a few favorites. We'll see.

That's 112 in bets - how much you think a show ticket on either of those horses will be worth? How much more expensive would a 1/all/all tri ticket be?
I guess there's money to be made today but you have to get really creative to do it.
    Unless Big Brown doesn't win.

Those odds were actual odds following Friday's advance wagering at Belmont Park.

Noteworthy: ESPN News just reported that Casino Drive has been scratched.

Why horseplayers die broke. Everyone on this thread is bemoaning the fact you can't make any money on the Belmont.
Say Big Brown goes off at 1-10. On Wall Street, a 10 percent return on a two-minute investment is considered pretty good. You can always hedge with an exotic bet.

You have 1000 to risk to make 100? I don't. Is it worth risking 100 just to make 10? Not to me.
An old track buddy of mine had the philosophy: Just bet more. Nice, unless you ain't got more.

If I told The Queen, Hey, I gambled our trip money to make enough to go out to dinner, she'd kick my jewels so hard they'd fly out my nose. I'd be a gelding.

With no Casino Crive, everybody and their brother will be betting the 1-all-all trifecta today, and unless those horses in the 70- or 80-to-1 range come in, it might be a losing wager.

Moddy, I know the psychology of horseplaying, because I do it. But finance is built on the opposite principle, which is hardly infallible (see, U.S. economy 2008), but which does have a little more math built into it. If a gambler honestly thinks Big Brown will win, a 10 percent return is nothing to sneeze at. There will be many more conventionally wagered races on the card, after all.

How much will the heat play into things today? Will it hurt Big Brown on his third race in 6 weeks?
