Five years for 50K? I guess if you can find good work, or you're self-employed in a way that isn't impacted by your location, you can probably save a lot on living expenses. Hard to believe, though, that the small number of people who would do this could create any kind of impact on the area. It would be an interesting experience, though.

Okay, we are totally doing this. We're bringing the lawn chairs, dragging them into the lobby, and you are getting me a duck.

    21,

Skip the ducks but go to Graceland (if only for the interior decorating tips) and the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis.

Also, the square "downtown" in Oxford is one of best in the South, though I don't know if it has a Jewish deli.

And you can swing by William Faulkner's house, which is a few blocks away.

Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

If the Peabody is booked, there's a Holiday Inn Select right across the street. But try for the Peabody.

Skip Rendezvous on the weekend. It's too long of a wait for over-hyped barbecue.

If you really feel like seeing the sights, do one night at the Peabody and then spend one night at a casino in Tunica. The Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale is really cool too.

What are the dates you will be in Oxford/Memphis or Nashville?

Memphis has the Memphis in May music festival during the first weekend of May.
Oxford has Double Decker music festival the last weekend of April.
Nashville has music all the time, and in all reality Memphis does too.

Anyways, I'll base my decision off the dates you are coming down and get back to you.

The wedding is on Mothers Day, so this would be the day or two before.

New issue, what is the deal with 'guest houses?' Apparently it's graduation weekend at Ole Miss, there is not a hotel room to be had that weekend. My brother--whose third wife's daughter is the bride--says he has reserved a 'guest house' for us. Same brother who has lived sporadically in teepees ('Just call the Stuckey's on Hwy 56, ask for Luke, he'll send someone to get me!') so we don't typically take his recommendations on real estate matters.

I hear 'guest house,' I think Bates Motel. Is that my bad yankee attitude insulting southern hospitality?

Memphis is sounding good to me. Maybe we'll stay there and commute 2 hours to the wedding in Oxford (half kidding).

Most "guest houses" here in Oxford are better/bigger than my 3BR/3BA apartment — at least for those who I've heard had "guest houses."

Another option is Batesville. It's off Interstate 55, which runs straight to Memphis, and is about 50 minutes from Memphis/Tunica (casinos), 20 minutes from Oxford and 30 minutes from Clarksdale if you want to visit there.

I'm not big on Memphis, I visit Nashville more each year, but it does have a lot to offer other than Beale and drive-by shootings.

As others have mentioned, Stax and Sun studios are really cool places to visit. Overton Square is another spot that has seen a resurgence the last few years.

Not sure when they start back up, but Levitt Shell, in Midtown and close to Overton Square, hosts free concerts on Saturday nights. It's an outdoor amphitheater and you can bring in blankets, chairs, coolers.

The Peabody hosts rooftop parties on Thursday nights (again, not sure when they start back up) and will generally have some good music.

Their is a dog track, Southland, in West Memphis, Ark., just across the river if you're in to that sort of thing.

Plenty of good food options in Memphis and, of course, the Redbirds, which is a good way to waste a day.

As Oxford goes, graduation weekend here can lead to gridlock. We are a small town and when you add in that many people it gets hectic.

But, Oxford is a really cool place with some of the best looking ladies, whose moms will be in town too I assume, in the country. It's not the "Mississippi" most people expect when they come here. A couple of years ago a group of people came down from Boston for a research project I had a part in and they were so amazed and how developed it was. I think they were literally expecting dirt floors, no shoes and no teeth — not saying that is not around though.

The Square is the spot for the best bars/restaurants and they will probably be packed that weekend. (My favorites — bar: Proud Larry's; restaurant: Ajax)

Other than bars and restaurants, I'd hit up Rowan Oak, The Grove, tour the campus, visit Square Books (one of the best independent bookstores in the country), Sardis Lake is near, Ole Miss baseball is at home that weekend hosting in-state rival Mississippi State, eat at Taylor Grocery and just drive around the county (make sure you have a GPS though, some places do get a little backwoods sketchy).

I'm sure there is more that I will think of, but if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

I would pay for the thread that results from 21 and Boom going to a dog track in West Memphis.
