You know what's funny, I was half-joking about that -- I had heard it as some kind of urban legend. But I was curious enough to Google it, and this apparently has been the stuff of serious thought going as far as the Atlantic. Lewinsky seemed to kick off the frenzy, no duh. And then there's this, which is very well researched and also very NSFW:

One of the more wild parties we've been to recently was a Bar Mitzvah celebration. My kids were royally pissed that they didn't have one.

take it from someone who's been to about 20 b.m.'s in the last six years -- they are ridiculous. way more expensive and over-the-top than our wedding was. the money rewards wr've given to the little darlings when we've gone as a fam of 5 has probably come to between 6 and 7 grand.

little wonder we're living paycheck to paycheck.
