Coach Johnson Holder rostered scout-team rover Dickie Smallwood. I ... guess?

Roster as a verb? Please give me the context.

  5. The team rosters three quarterbacks.

    Argh.

  6. Two items that an editor I had many years ago stressed:

Unexpected accident. An accident is an event that is unexpected or it wouldn't be an accident, he would point out.

The word straight. He outlawed that when in the `60s he had a writer write that Sandy Koufax struck out a hitter on three straight curveballs, and the editor was stuck on the question of how they could have been curveballs when they were straight.

Well, Tracy, Sandy was so good he could strike a guy out even if the curveballs didn't break.

I can think of one kind of accident whose delivery is pretty expected. :-\

Thanks, IJAG. I couldn't have said it better.

Wait! I could have said it better. But then, I'm trying to ironic.

I don't understand the problem with "on the season."

That said, in my gamers I try to write ... "Jimmy Jack scored his ninth of the season to give Bumblefuck Catholic a 1-0 lead in the 77th minute." But occasionally, "Jimmy Jack has nine goals on the season" works its way into copy.
