Hoping to get some more eyes on this one by posting on Anything goes.

So with a runner on first, batter lifts a fly ball to the fence. The centerfielder can't haul it in, but it's unclear that he dropped it. Runner never attempts to reach second, so they throw him out at the base.

Does that go down as a fielder's choice? Or is it a single, 8-6? Seems like the guy deserves the hit.

I'd say a force out makes it a fielder's choice.

Yep. It sucks for the batter but it is an 8-6 FC.

Yeah, I figured as much, but as SID says, it sucks for the hitter. He would have had an easy double, possibly a triple had there been nobody on base.

Yep. Can't give the guy a hit because he didn't advance the runner. Not his fault, but what can you do.

And you can't give the outfielder an error, since they got a putout.
