With some perspective, I'm a bit tired of hearing about the Fabulous Big Red Machine. From '69 to '79 they won 2 WS, lost 2 WS and lost 2 NLCS. They won and played a great series against the Red Sox and they lost to 2 other teams that have claims for greatness in their era, the Orioles and A's. After they won back-to-back the Yankees did they same thing and upped them by appearing in 3 straight series, some thing the Big Red Machine never did.

Relatively speaking the Orioles, A's, Yankees were just as fabulous.
No doubt they were excellent and even great, but... Fuck You Joe Morgan

They are the last NL team to repeat as World Series champions, which is a big part of their "mystique."

For all the current and future Hall of Famers on that team and in the dugout, maybe they underachieved?

A strike against Steinbrenner is that HUGE 12-year gap without a post-season appearance.

I think the Yankees won in the 1970s in spite of King George not because of him. And 1990s run was due more to the fact others were handling the baseball operations.

I'm sure he'll get in, but I don't think he deserves it.

And the counter to that is that during this particular 12-year stretch, they had consecutive seasons of 91, 87, 97, 90, 89 and 85 wins and an 88-win season thrown in later. I mean they won 97 games in 1985, six better than anyone in the league except the team in their division that won 99. So hold that against the owner.

And that was when only 4 teams made the playoffs, as opposed to the "everybody in the pool" system they have now.

As expected, Bobby Cox, Tony La Russa, Joe Torre all unanimous selections by Veterans Committee.

If Maddux and Glavine are elected by the writers, I might make another trip to Cooperstown in late August July.

And Marvin Miller goes from one vote short the last time (11 votes) to not even 50 percent this time.

Results of the Expansion Era Ballot (12 votes needed for election): Bobby Cox (16 votes, 100%); Tony La Russa (16 votes, 100%); Joe Torre (16 votes, 100%); Dave Concepcion, Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Billy Martin, Marvin Miller, Dave Parker, Dan Quisneberry, Ted Simmons and George Steinbrenner each received six or fewer votes.

New voters, or did that many just change their minds?

The Miller thing gets more disgraceful each time. Shame on the Veterans Committee, and on baseball as a whole.
