In addition to owning a telephone and going to lunch, Johnson managed to lose $552 million in the last quarter alone.

Maybe he wasn't getting out of bed early enough.

Penney's is where all the high-class Wal-Mart shoppers go, though.

One thing that that doesn't touch on. ... He put in the "no sales" thing and they even ran ads deriding that style of retail. ... only to have him panic and start offering weekly sales after only a few months. I don't care what your strategy is, or what the market conditions are, when you are all over the place like that, it undermines your identity.

You're also running uphill in general if you're in the business of running a large store in an Internet age. We've talked on the Walmart thread about that -- I was in a Walmart over the weekend, and the traffic was noticeably light. Same with Best Buy. The thing is, it's so easy to shop online, and the choices so endless, that merely showing up to a store to browse seems like more of a hobby than a necessity.

Or he just may not have been waking up early enough.

(But I'd also stipulate that clothes and shoes are two retail areas that will never move entirely online.)

So that's why Penney's is going downhill, they're advertising in newspapers.

Actually, the changes he made improved the stores and the way they display their clothes. And it is much cheaper than Macy's.
