Banned words and phrases

    Disagree about "manicured lawns". There is a difference.

    My neighbor's lawn is manicured. Ours has been a train wreck.

    I find that useful shorthand to mean that the suspect surrendered peacefully. In a case where someone has committed a violent crime, it's instructive to know that he didn't resist while being arrested.

    There have been numerous threads on this but that's fine. Gives me a chance to rail about the cliche I hate more than any:

    "Basically, we just have to .... blah, blah, blah."

    There are athletes who couldn't start a single sentence if the word "Basically" didn't exist.

    While we're at it, the word "just" is overused.

    Also I hate "Certainly" to start a sentence.

    And "Definitely." I especially despite the phrase, "Most definitely."

    Anything that's "controversial" with "gate" tacked onto the end.
