Another band that comes to mind is Metallica. When I first saw them I couldn't believe how powerful they were live.

Hey sportschick, 1992 called and it wants it's music back. ;)

(Just kidding, I'm a huge Soul Asylum fan from way back, having grown up in the Midwest)

If BYH can stay stuck in 1989, I stay stuck in 1992-93, dammit!

Plu they were just far superior live, and somebody already mentioned Pearl Jam.

And Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley are dead, so they aren't an option.

KISS would be valid if their live albums actually were live.

Both were overdubbed in the studio before they got released.

Metallica must carry a Black Album and before caveat. After Load they sucked in the studio and sucked in concert.

sc's right about Soul Asylum, though. Also in the Minneapolis division: Prince, The Gear Daddies.

    Bruce is a great call.

    One less-obvious one...

Joe Jackson's singing is so much better live he has actually recorded a "studio" album in front of an audience to improve the performance.

I know my early-90s alternative rock bands, dammit!

One who sounds oodles better recorded than live -- Courtney Love. Hey, she's on-key in the studio!
