Bad news for me: Court rules employees can be fired for being irresistible

A dentist fired one of his employees because he was afraid he wouldn't be able to resist having an affair with her at some point. Well, that, and his wife ordered him to get rid of her after finding some text messages:

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled the dentist was within his legal rights.

Wasn't this multiple episodes of L.A. Law or Ally McBeal?

 

Not ever having been to law school, I'd bet the judges on the Iowa Supreme Court are infinitely more qualified to rule on this than me.

Still - would he be able to legally fire a gay man for this "offence?" Or an African American woman? Or [fill in whatever floats your particular boat, like dwarf sailors]?

 

Hotness is not a protected class.

Britwit, if hotness was a mere pretext for firing someone because of their race or gender, that would be illegal. If it's just hotness, it'd be legal.

The dentist here wasn't completely innocent but she wasn't fired because of her gender. She was fired because the dentist's wife wanted her gone.

I do think he should have given her more than a month of severance for 11 years of working.

 

This explains the states with the lowest unemployment rates: North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa.

nmmets: This story has been going around for a couple of days and I still can't find a picture of her. Maybe "Melissa Nelson" is another Suzy Favor alias.

Yeah, even some newspaper companies give better severance.
