If you do talk to them in person, go in singing this song. ;D

P_W, I feel your pain. I really do. Been there. Done that. Told them to shove the t-shirt up their ass. That said, if you think banks are bad -- and they are -- just wait until the insurance industry gets ahold of you.

  3. Thanks for letting me vent, guys.

    Lesson learned.

My overdraft protection is a smart wife.

My wife is the reason we have overdraft protection.

I'll echo the idea of finding a local credit union.

And I thought I was bad with money.

Anyone want to explain to me about the credit unions?

I overdrafted once more than 10 years ago. Vowed never to have it happen again, and it hasn't. Know what comes in, know what goes out, know exactly to the penny what you can spend and never ever ever ever sign up for automatic deductions. Simple.

One little penny. That's all it takes to get screwed over.

Had the same problem ... they took the big check out first, and that caused two overdrafts....

In their defense, i'm glad my car payment didn't bounce... but they were going to ding me two fees.

I went to talk to the bank manager, and she said that if I applied for their credit card, she would waive the fees. I did, she did and the world was a happy place.

I had about 2-3 overdrafts a couple years ago, when I was really struggling after starting a new job on a different coast. The $18 charge wasn't terrible, I thought, but that was only for first-time offenses.

Then, I got a overdraft charge for a candy bar. A 59-cent Three Musketeers ended up costing me $34.59. That was the last time -- will always be the last time.

Credit unions are member-owned, so they tend to be more customer oriented than a bank, which is corporate-owned.

I bank with Delta Community Credit union and USAA, both outstanding.

As for the overdrafts, go to a branch, stat. When this very thing happened to me due to a online bill payment problem, they waived about $300 in overdrafts for me. The 800 numbers, as Clark Howard would say, are customer no-service.
