Bad bank people

  1. While acknowledging that it's my error and not someone else's fault, I still think that something my bank did - a policy it has - is unethical.

    I woke up this morning to seven overdraft charges. Basically, I transferred some money to savings yesterday, thinking that a check had cleared without actually checking to see if it cleared. Happens, right? You pay your overdraft, and you get on with things.

    Well ... as it turns out, when National City Bank - and most others now - assess your charges at the start of each business day, they do so in order of biggest to smallest. So my house payment went first - immediate overdraft. Then my $100 cable bill. Overdraft No. 2. Then five more charges I made last week - gas and food purchases, none bigger than $31, $22, then four more that were under $10. Dinged $34 extra for each one. Each one was accumulated some time last week, many on Wednesday. At the time they were purchased, there was plenty of money in the account.

    I called three times and was told that since it was "not a banking error," they could do nothing to help me. Not even two weeks before Christmas. They told me I should have overdraft protection. Probably true.

    Basically, if they would have processed the big check last - which would have actually been the order the purchases were made - I would have had one overdraft charge, which I could handle. $250 in mid-December on our salaries? Not so much :(

    Stupid me. Heartless bank. I know that they are legally within their rights, but it still feels really, really cold to me to charge someone seven overdrafts at this time of year.

    I know I'm bound to get some, "I don't feel sorry for you, idiot" posts on here, because that's what kind of place this can be. Let this be some sort of lesson, I guess, to everybody, that when you purchase something with a debit card, and use it as a credit card, it may take several days to clear. And the bank configures things in a way to maximize overdrafts.

    So have you cancelled your account and started with a new bank yet?

    Oh, and you should have overdraft protection. And you shouldn't have to pay extra for it.
  3. Well, I threated that about 10 times, but they didn't seem to care. Plus, just about every bank apparently has that policy. I'm trying to find one that doesn't - I just think, on principle, that I can't trust a bank that pulls those shenanigans. But it's a fund-raiser for the m##(* Fadflkadf ers
  4. Pulitzer, it's the system of one small mistake killing the little guy.

    I feel your pain because about 2 years ago same thing happened to me. Had to borrow money from the 'rents to survive for two weeks. Talk about humbling and a lesson learned.

    Pullitzer, my wife and I had this happen to us when we first got married and joined our bank accounts. Here's my best advice: Don't call. Go to the actual bank and talk to the manager or loan officer there. They are always 100 percent nicer and more apt to listen to you than someone in a call center. I promise. Go there as soon as possible and plead with them if there's anything they can do - like forgive most or all of the fees. I almost guarantee you they will if you don't have a history of it.

    I cancelled my bank account because they kept sending me offers to "refinance" my mortgage at a lower rate. Yeah, it was less per month, but that's because they wanted to start it over again at 30 years.

    I am in awe of my current bank. The woman who handles overdraft charges is nice to me. The one time I miscalculated and would have bounced a check, she waived the fee. She waives the fee for new checks when I order them. And it's freakin' Citibank. Contrast this with all the local mom-and-pop banks over the years who never missed a chance to bend me over and cornhole me with all the ardor of a Viagra-addled bonobo whenever there was a chance to impose "service" charges.

    I agree with Magnum's advice of going to your branch and talking to them. Can't hurt. They have the power to do it.

    No, it's called keeping track of your money, not taking shots at people on here because you made an error in judgment. You and I know in this business that we make very little money, so it's irresponsible not to watch it like a hawk. How did this happen? Did you not balance your checkbook? How do you get to a point where you don't have an idea of what exactly you have in your checking account?

    Next time, go with the local credit union. They're much more understanding when it comes to these things.

    Pulitzer, banks are not the only crooks during this time of year. Alaint phone company in my neck of the woods are crooks too. They are charging cell phone users and land line users for two months on their current bills. But that is so stupid because how do you know what charges you incur for the next month whether it be cell and landline.

  12. I obviously figured this post was coming from someone. Thanks for getting it out of the way.

    I guess my point is that a lot of these charges were made last week, when I did have plenty of money for them to clear.

    And I do watch my money like a hawk, which is why I was hoping that the bank would cut me some sort of break, considering that I've never bounced anything in a decade as a customer. Never.

    I still think it's a sneaky policy for banks to clear big checks first in a series, so that they can charge someone $34 for a $6 12-pack of Diet Coke and a candy bar.

    Is it my fault, ultimately, for not knowing all of the fine print? Yes.

    Does the bank set it up to pounce on and take maximum advantage of people's mistakes? Yes to that, too.
