Backup baseball beat writers

    Not really. Sometimes you and the clubhouse benefit when you've had a break from each other.

    Few people notice. I can take an entire weeklong trip off and get no-emails asking why I'm not writing.

    Readers don't care unless it goes from Buster Olney to some preps guy... Even then they probably don't...

    It's an awful grind and near impossible to do with a family for any length of time.
    Quick count in my head. In 19 years I've worked with 14 MLB beat writers. Nine were married. Seven divorced.
    I had this conversation with another editor at an APSE regional a couple years back. We figured it was a five-year beat. Of course there are exceptions. Then, when you come off the beat, and you're around, your family is accustomed to doing things without you. Especially in the summers.
    It is tough.
