    If that little voice in your head says "Don't do it or you may be sorry" it's best you listen.

    If I were you, I would hang in and see if you get an offer. If you do, I would go back to the boss and say you have this offer that pays XXX more and see if they will give you a bump.

    Even if they say they can't give you money, maybe you can play it into some new responsibility or at least some goodwill since you are showing your company loyalty.

    There is a slight chance that if you tell them you have an offer they will say, "Wow, good luck in the new job!" Then you are stuck looking like a schlub if you stay.

    You can always say that you ultimately didn't pass the criminal history check, I guess.
