I wonder how the federal prosecutors are feeling about Ms. Bell now? Let's see what the article says on the matter:

According to Daniel C. Richman, a former assistant United States attorney and now a professor at Columbia Law School, the government is not likely to be pleased that one of its potential witnesses has decided to pose nude for money.

“The government is generally interested in protecting the credibility of their witnesses, and if there is any reason to believe the witness is trying to profit from her involvement in the case, it is usually something defense lawyers seize on,” Richman said.

This is what is typically known as impugning one's own credibility. Bell has previously come under fire from some quarters as only being interested in making money off of Bonds, one way or another. I'm not sure that these statements from Bell's agent (she has an agent?) will help dissuade that opinion:

Schmidt said that Bell, through her appearance in Playboy, was finally getting the money she was promised.

“This is a payday she deserves and that Barry Bonds never got her,” Schmidt said. “All she got from Bonds was being dumped and lied to. There was a settlement discussion on the table, and he pulled it off the table and said, ‘I don’t care.’ He never showed any class after he asked her to move out of San Francisco.”

Perhaps Bell needs money right now. Perhaps she feels this is her time, time to get yet more derivative attention from being associated with Bonds as he approaches the all-time HR record. Time to grab the brass ring, as it were.

Some would say this is but another step in a well-conceived plan to either exact the revenge of the jilted lover against Bonds and/or to continue to milk his fame and fortune for her own.

Whatever the case may be, it would appear we have our latest Jessica Hahn -- a woman attached to a famous man willing to bear all for her aggrandizement.

And in that vein, she joins Mark Fainaru-Wada, Lance Williams, the San Francisco Chronicle, the New York Daily News and numerous other organizations and individuals who are more than willing to profit from their pursuit of 'the public's right to know' regarding Barry Bonds' alleged PED usage. You'll recall, Bell first came to public prominence when she came forward - obviously with no thought of profit - to corroborate Bonds' alleged steroid usage.

Some will undoubtedly use her posing for Playboy to refer to her with a derogatory name usually reserved for members of the female gender who trade their sexuality for money.

The most ironic thing is, from all that we have learned so far, Bell may prove to be the least whorish of any of those who have profited, and will continue to profit, on the back of Barry Bonds.

Why is the Times just getting to this now? We were all over this a month ago: http://www.sportsjournalists.com/forum/threads/43609/

Great question, 21. No idea. I just came across it.

Actually, maybe they're bringing it up now because the grand jury has been extended, and based on the NYDN report an indictment is likely. So perhaps it's to reinforce her compromised credibility as a witness, complete with quotes from the law prof. That's my guess. ?

Plus, it steals a little thunder from the Daily News, as well as gravy-trains off of Quinn's reporting to recycle an otherwise old story.

    Bonds sells. :)

what the fuck does bonds sell? PEDs?

that might be one of the most ignorant statements i've ever read.

bonds sells ... what? if any athlete -- other than vick -- were in the process of breaking this record, think maybe we'd all be sick and tired of seeing his face plastered on billboards and TV hawking everything from shoes to underwear to charcoal to cereal?

    bonds doesn't sell shit.

    how's the job search going?

    I wouldn't buy $100 for $10 from Bonds on a bet.

The Cincinnati Post's online site is carrying this short AP blurb on Bell's upcoming appearance in Playboy:

Here's an excerpt from the Newsday piece:

Bell's appearance in the magazine can't help the government's case against her former lover.

Defense lawyers are widely expected to argue that Bell was a woman scorned because of Bonds' decision to marry another woman during their relationship. Her appearance on Playboy may only add fuel to the defense's case.

Bell said the photo shoot boosted her confidence. She declined to say how much Playboy was paying her.

Does Playboy ask any woman involved in some sort of scandal to pose regardless of whether or not they're worth seeing naked?

They didn't ask Monica, did they?
