Maybe I'm ignorant or delusional, but how many entry level jobs in ANY industry start you out at $35-40K?
I'm not talking big league, major company jobs that only top-level graduates or well-connected people would be able to get. I'm talking your basic entry level position, or even a step above, at a small to mid-size company outside of an inflationary market like New York or Los Angeles?
    Engineers, yes. Lawyers, maybe.
I'd guess the average in most industries would be somewhere well south of $30K.
In newspapers, it's probably somewhere between $20 and $25K. It sucks, but that's what the job pays. You can move up the ladder if you have your act together (or at least you used to be able to), but you certainly ain't starting out in the $40K range at 98 percent of all outlets.

I don't think that should count in this conversation because it requires a graduate professional degree.

  4. Even physicians make less than $45-50k for the first 3-5 years after medical school.

Yes, but their earnings path resembles a hockey stick.

Exactly. I always think of residency as part of medical school, even though I know it's not.

$40,900? Where is that paper and do they need a sports writer? When I was let go at my paper my final salry was in the neighborhood of $26K with health and dental as well as a 401K and I got 45 cents a mile.

Do you have experience with medical training? Your spouse or yourself? Medical school it is definitely not. Combine the crap pay with the horrendous hours and residents probably make way less than most of our first journalism jobs.
