Author wants to know why Duke-hating carries a homophobic component

Might be a fair point. Isn't it enough to yell "you suck" at a Duke player without the gay references?

I think all the "Duke players are gay" bashing started with Danny Fairy.

It was probably when J.J. Reddick admitted liking to write poetry.

 

Of course, "you suck" is intrinsically homophobic...

 

Laettner sure caught a lot of it. I was surprised he wasn't mentioned in the story.

 

Every white college basketball player with longer hair is called those names at almost every road game.

I'm not condoning it on any level, but it's hardly limited to Duke.

 

There was a Florida player a few years back, Matt Walsh. Good-looking kid, long hair.

Every game he played the fans would scream "You're a faggot" or "Walsh, you suck cock."

I asked one of the beat writers if that ever bothered the kid and he said, "The guy is dating a Playboy Playmate, I doubt he cares."
